About the event

Join us for a community rice planting day at Fondy Farm/Mequon Nature Preserve on July 2 to plant flooded rice, or nplej liag.

Flooded rice has been identified as a Midwest climate-adapted variety through the dedicated work and research of Dr. Michael Schlappi of Marquette University and local farmers from the Fondy Food Center. This work supports the growing of culturally important food crops for the Hmong/Hmoob community of growers in Southeast Wisconsin.Participants will learn more about this vital staple crop, get hands-on experience planting in the field, and share a community potluck dinner with growers, partners, and community members.

What to Expect:

11:00 AM – Arrival

11:30 AM–4:00 PM – Field work

4:00–5:00 PM – Community potluck

Please wear sturdy work shoes or water-friendly footwear. Some wading boots will be available. Be prepared to get wet and muddy and to try something new! Bring a water bottle, sunscreen or sunwear, and bug spray.

RSVP is not required, but encouraged. Please bring a dish to share for the potluck. Parking Map:
