Sustainability 3.0 Field Day a Success!

Eighteen people gathered at Stute Farms, a friend of Michael Fields Ag Institute, on the afternoon of August 4th for the Sustainability 3.0 Field Day. MFAI Agroecologist Nicole Tautges showcased her Kernza research plots, located at the Stute Farms, where participants examined plots with different fertilizer rates and combinations. "The goal of this study is to identify fertilizer recommendations, for nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium, to maximize Kernza grain yield and quality for Midwest growers," Tautges told participants. Field day attendees also got a chance to taste naan bread made with Kernza, from Artisan Naan (link) in St. Cloud, MN.

MFAI affiliate scientist Jim Stute presented data on his on-farm research with cover crop economics and his project, "Do Cover Crops Pay?" Attendees also participated in a water infiltration demonstration, and were surprised to see differences in water infiltration through soils with different management history.

Stay tuned for more Kernza events next year or reach out to web@michaelfields.org to learn more about Kernza.
